yarn candy saturday

yarn in the sun, originally uploaded by enting.

Still no computer.  I'm starting to go (more) nuts.  But I spent a couple hours this morning spinning up the rest of the wool/mohair locks I picked up at Maryland a year and a half ago, and then I plied them (after this picture was taken).  *This* is why I (finally) have a ballwinder.

Oooh, other knitting-related tidbit--I saw the Mountain Goats [indie rock band] play last Saturday, and I _actually didn't knit through the concert_.  It was that good.  (Also crowded, but really, really good.)

eye candy friday, late-night edition

lettuce, originally uploaded by enting.

My computer is completely nonfunctional (not accepting charge) for a little over a week now.  I'm told that fixing it will cost hundreds of dollars that I don't have.  Otherwise, most of life is good, or at least not worse than last week...

One of the good bits was last weekend's trip to NYC, during which I went to the Red Hook Community Farm with a few of my friends--it's a really cute farm, topsoil placed on what looks like it used to be a parking lot.  Nearly all of their produce was incredibly tempting--just about everything, that is, except for the watermelons that were full of rat holes.  Ah, well.  The lettuce and kale and peppers and pumpkins (et cetera) were all lovely.

Knitting-wise, I've been working on a Secret Group Project and the Peacock Feather Shawl, plus I started Icarus out of the yellow/orange/brown mohair blend that I dyed on dye-day.

The first picture was taken from the plane on Monday morning, the second is from my parents' front yard, and the last two are from Chapin Orchard.

This week has been busy, and my computer's broken, and I've spent my spare time on reading (Freddy and Fredericka is an excellent book) rather than much knitting, but I did finally spin on my wheel again last night.  That was a good thing.

eye candy friday

When this posts, I will (I hope) be on a plane to Atlanta, where I will await another plane to Denver, on my way to Boulder.  In the spirit of vacation, and since I never posted them here, I present a couple of my favorite pictures from my lab's two June field trips.

That first picture is from our lab canoe trip, shot with a waterproof disposable camera; the rest are from our lab hike in Hickory Run State Park, specifically the boulder field there, and were shot with either my digital camera or my "real" camera.

The place where we went canoeing, on the Brandywine, was fun, though perhaps on the more challenging side of what I was anticipating, my prior canoe experience having been very mellow.  Still, it was fun, but I never again need to see people wielding a chainsaw from a canoe.  (They kindly turned it off when they saw us approaching.)  And next time, the canoe-steering learning curve should be steeper.

Hiking at Hickory Run was awesome.  The trails could've been marked better, but we didn't have too much of an adventure...  It was wonderful to be in the woods, to pick blueberries, and to see this amazing boulder field.

I expect to be away from the internet until Wednesday evening, by which point I may even have finished some knitting.  I got in a good few inches on the wool/mohair sock on Sunday, but that's pretty much been it this week.

See you (or, well, your internet presences) next week!

eye candy friday: lehnen

Toward the end of Fiber Night last night, this cutie came up to sit next to me.

Lehnen

fuzzy toes

Lehnen, aside from normal cat-cuteness, has incredibly fuzzy toes.  So adorable!

Heirloom tomatoes are lovely.  (Too bad they taste like tomatoes.)

eye candy friday: dye-day edition

I have a huge pile of freshly dyed wool!  I think I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend...lots of spinning.  And probably even more gazing at my wool with a smile on my face.

I showed the first batch of roving on Sunday; here's the rest:

dye day fiber

The three bits on the left were microwave-dyed; the fourth was kettle-dyed blue; the two on the right started out as grey-brown wool blend.

Blueishwoolblend

I think this shows the blueishness of the kettle-dyed stuff a bit better.  Anyway, it's a lovely greyish blue.

Now, the yarn.  I bought two half-pound skeins of Henry's Attic kid mohair specifically for dye-day.  One of them is now yellow and orange and brownish-orangey:

yellow-orange-brown mohair

This may just turn into an Icarus shawl as soon as it gets sufficiently cool and dry to deal with mohair.

The other skein was supposed to be chocolate brown with bits of yellow.

chocolate mohair

That's basically what it is (the yellow bits are hiding from the camera), but the brown came out a little purplier than I wanted, so I'm going to let it sit for a while and think about what to do with it.

And...I overdyed the stuff I posted about last week:

overdyeing

Much better.

Not all moths are horrible.

I have no idea what kind this one is, just that it's not going to try to eat either my wool or my grains.  And that it's pretty.  (I found it in the entryway, attracted by the lamp.)

Happy Friday!  It's something like ten degrees cooler than yesterday, so I'm pleased.

In lieu of new pictures of different summer flora, here's a very happy Mel.  I could use some of that peace, myself.

Happy weekend, everyone.

eye candy friday

This edition of Eye Candy Friday is brought to you by the silly decision to start a 36-exposure roll of film halfway through a day of hiking (when I also had a digital camera with me).  All of the pictures here are from wandering around Philly in the last week of June, trying to use up the roll of film before my hiking companions forgot that I'd taken more pictures.

I'm also declaring this to be my 007 post for June despite the fact that two of these pictures are actually from July 1st.
